Beadlet Anemone
Actina equina
Beadlet anemones are very common & come in a variety of colours from red, brown, orange & green.
They grow to about 5 cm and can be found at low tide in rock-pools and a attached to groins, pier supports & other structures.
They give birth viviparously, releasing fully formed young anemones through their mouths.
They are easy to keep in an aquarium as they tolerate very harsh conditions.
They feed on a variety of foods, I feed mine with mussel, mysis shrimp, gamma shrimp, in fact they eat everything in the frozen food range that I feed to the other inhabitants of the aquarium even plankton..
The beadlet to left can be seen showing typical blue ring of acrochagi or nematocyst nodules.
I have noticed that these are normally displayed when threatened by another anemone, sending sometimes stinging harpoons to ward of the intruder.
Here you can see a beadlet unhappy with a Snakelock anemone which came a bit too close.
These two red beadlets have found a good spot in the middle of the aquarium.
Two orange/brown beadlets attached to a small rock in front of a Portuguese Oyster.
