Hermit Crab
Pagurus bernhardus
Hermit Crabs are hardy creatures well suited
to life in the aquarium.
They readily scavenge
for food, cleaning up the substrate & help keep the aquarium clean from
uneaten food.
They do require a
selection of suitable shells to be available for when they outgrow their current
one.
They can be a little aggressive
to each other, especially if they take a fancy to another’s shell.
This Hermit has be caught by a competitor when attempting to change shell.
We have not seen Hermit Crabs at Poole, these ones came from Osmington, Dorset.
Here despite its
fragile appearance the Spider Crab quite easily fends off the Hermit Crab.
